John R. Krause, 91, formerly of Petersburg, NE passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Norfolk Veteran's Home in Norfolk, NE. Koenig, 85, of Primrose, NE, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, following a brief battle with cancer, on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at her home near Primrose, NE. Dorothy Ann Koenig, the daughter of Clarence and Anna (Larkin) Purdy was born on August 28, 1932 at Greeley, NE. She was baptized and confirmed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, NE. She attended elementary school and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 1949. Following her schooling Dorothy worked for a short time at the Locker in Greeley then moved to Omaha, NE and went to Air Traffic Control School. She lived there for a few years and worked at the Chocolate Factory and Mutual of Omaha. Dorothy moved back to Greeley to help care for her father who was ill. On June 3, 1954 Dott was united in marriage to Edward J. Koenig at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, NE. The couple resided on a farm near Primrose, NE. Along with raising their nine children and helping on the farm, milking cows and raising chickens, Dott worked outside the home. Among the many places that she worked were: the lunch room at school, Smitty’s Bar, Pibel Lake Bible School during the summer, the courthouses in Greeley and Boone Counties, and she took care of the elderly in their homes. Dorothy was definitely a worker and gave her time and money to many different charity organizations. Dott was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, NE as well as St. Anne’s Altar Society and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, cooking and reading. On the farm she tended to her large garden and flowers. She was very festive and loved to dress up, especially for Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day. Sophie Josephine Smith, the daughter of Charles R. and Lucy (Gregroski) Sleva was born on April 21, 1930 on a farm in Platte County, Nebraska. She was baptized, received Solemn Communion, and was confirmed at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Columbus, NE. Sophie attended kindergarten at District 4, and elementary at St. Anthony’s in Columbus, NE. She went to high school at St. Bonaventure and Kramer High School in Columbus, NE. On June 19, 1946 Sophie was united in marriage to Russell D. Smith at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Columbus, NE; The couple lived in several communities including: Columbus, NE; Albion, NE, Logansport, IN; Warsaw, IN; and then settled in Primrose, NE in 1965. In 2012 Sophie moved to Madison, NE. She worked as a housewife and homemaker. She also did custom painting on the exterior and interior of houses. Sophie was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE. She had served as president of the Altar Society at St. Mary’s in Primrose, NE. Sophie taught CCD in most of the communities they lived in. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Sophie loved to work with her flowers, and enjoyed fishing, playing cards, visiting, and her polka music. She is survived by her children: June (Larry) Boeh of Norfolk, NE; Holly (Doug) Kolm of Norfolk, NE; Tori (David) Nunn of Surprise, AZ; Jocelyn (Kelly) Petersen of Madison, NE; and Scott (Brenda) Smith of Grand Island, NE; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sister-in-law Mary Lucht of Strafford, MO; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Elizabeth “Liz” Mary Zwiener was born on August 18, 1941 in Spalding, NE, to Albert and Magelene (Woodley) Zwiener. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, NE. Liz attended rural country school and Spalding Academy in Spalding through the eighth grade. Liz then worked as a cook in the Spalding Academy lunch room, Spalding Head Start, and the Friendship Villa nursing home in Spalding. Later she helped her sister Janet operate a daycare facility. Liz lived in Spalding all of her life and was involved in her community in a variety of ways. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Anne’s Altar Society, and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church her entire life. Liz was always a religious person who loved her family and relatives very much. She enjoyed decorating cakes, crocheting, and playing bingo. She also enjoyed taking care of children, and was like a grandma to many area children. She attended school in St. Edward. Following her schooling she worked as a waitress. On September 19, 1962 Jane was united in marriage to Galen Schoening at Yankton, SD. They resided in Albion where Jane worked as a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion, NE and sang in the choir there. Jane was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to spend time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Jane also enjoyed her time with her family hunting and fishing. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1957 and later from a Diesel Mechanic School in Omaha, NE. Dick served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. On June 10, 1962, Dick was united in marriage to Bonnie June Worden at the Methodist Church in Burwell, NE. The couple lived in the Burwell area until 1970 when they moved to the Elgin and Petersburg area. Dick loved the ranching life and working with horses. He also enjoyed attending craft and antique shows, but his favorite pastime was attending his grandchildren’s activities. Dick recently became a great-grandpa and was very proud of that. He was a member of the American Legion Post #334 of Petersburg, NE.
