Riverside finished 17th as a team Friday in the Class D state cross country meeting in Kearney.
The Chargers were led by senior McKayla Mogensen, who finished 74th in a time of 23:12.1. Also for Riverside were Molly Berger (82nd-23:37.4), Amber Berger (85th-23:42.1) and Jackie Smith (94th-24:00.9). The Riverside girls placed third as a team at districts in Ainsworth on Thursday, qualifying the team for the state cross country meet next week.
Seniors Molly Berger and Makayla Mogensen led the way for the Chargers, earning the final two individual qualifying spots at the D-3 District Meet. After picking up the first get, they lost their first game to the host team with a close 1-2 score. Sets were 25-22, 8-25, 22-25. Senior Karen Schmeits put down 13 of the team's 23 kills against the Wolfpack. Schmeits was also the team leader in digs with 7. Their second game of the night against Neligh-Oakdale resulted in a win in two sets for the Lady Chargers. Set scores were 25-23 and 25-17. They put down 19 kills against the Lady Warriors and picked up 9 digs. Junior Baylee Wlaschin served a pair of aces and had 18 assists. This will leave the team with a season record of 12-9. Up next, they will be at the Goldenrod Conference Tournament. Riverside High School is gearing up for their Homecoming week September 28 through October 2.
The Dress up Days will be Monday-Hobo Day, Tuesday- Destination Day (Seniors: Mexico, Juniors: Greece, Sophomores: Tropical, Freshmen: Ireland, JH and Elementary: USA, Staff: All), Wednesday- Dress like your favorite celebrity, Thursday-Twin Day, Friday-Blue and Gold. There will be a Homecoming Powder Puff Football Game Monday, September 28 at 7 p.m. at the high school football field. There will be a 1 p.m. dismissal Friday, October 2 The Homecoming Parade will be at Spalding, Friday, Oct 2. The Parade will be at 11 a.m. and the Pep Rally at 11:30. The Riverside FFA Chapter met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 22, to discuss summer activities in the Primrose park. Ray Bennett, representing the Boone-Nance Cattlemen, presented the chapter with a grant to be used towards contest preparation materials, updated shop equipment, and a set of Riverside FFA jackets. The FFA chapter greatly appreciates the generosity of this organization and thanks them for their support of agriculture! Students donned their backpacks and headed back to their classrooms at Riverside Public Schools in Cedar Rapids and Spalding this morning, August 14th. All are invited to the Riverside Communities Back to School Picnic, to be held at the Spalding City Park at 6:30 pm this evening, with the ribbon cutting for the new Multi-purpose Gym and Cafeteria in front of the grandstand at 7:30 pm. Best of luck to all the students and teachers for a fulfilling 2015-16 school year! The 7th annual Cedar's Rapid Run will take place this coming Saturday, August 1st, in conjunction with the Cedar Rapids Alumni weekend.
There are a variety of races to take part in, including a free Tot Trot, which begins at 8:00 am. A one mile run will begin at 8:10 am, followed by a non-competitive one mile walk starting at 8:25 am, and a 5k (3.1 mile) run, also starting at 8:25 am. Runners are asked to meet at Cedar Park on West Main Street. Those wishing to register race-day are asked to do so before 7:30 am. Awards will be appointed to: KIDS 1 MILE: Overall trophy to fastest male/female. Then 3 deep medals awarded in these age groups: 8 & under; 9-10; and 11-12. 5K: Overall trophy to fastest male/female + gift certificate to Cedar's Rapid Stop. Also, the top 3 male/female finishers will get a special medal for overall top 3. After that, there will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals in the following age groups: 14 & under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. 5k Alumni: Fastest male/female that graduated from Cedar Rapids/Riverside High School will be awarded a trophy. Proceeds go towards Alumni Scholarship Fund and/or Riverside School. Each spring, the Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association presents awards to recognize excellence in administrators, board members, and teachers in member schools, and to recognize their commitment to their students and schools. This year, the NRCSA bestowed the Outstanding Elementary Teacher award upon Riverside Public School's fourth grade teacher Mrs. Bonnie McPhillips. Originally from Hampton, Nebraska, Mrs. McPhillips graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a B.S. in Education in K-8 Elementary Education and K-9 Special Education. McPhillips took her first teaching job at Inman, NE, where she taught special education, and in 1980 began teaching third and fourth grades in Cedar Rapids. Congratulations to Mrs. McPhillips for the honored recognition! Make plans to head to Cedar Rapids for their Annual Cedar Rapids Community Picnic, to be held June 20, 2015, at the City Park. Lots of fun activities are on the agenda for the day, including a co-ed sand volleyball tournament, coed Chicago ball tournament, and a washer tournament. There will be bounce houses, games for kids, game and vendor booths, a kiddie parade, and kids' water fight for the younger crowd, and a beer garden for the adults. The Fire Department will serve hamburgers and hot dogs from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm, and there will be a free will donation pork sandwich supper from 5:00-7:00 pm. Bring your lawn chair to enjoy the entertainment, which will begin at 8:00 pm, featuring In-Between Acts from previous Melodramas performed at Cedar Rapids. Music will follow from 9:00-11:00 pm. |
