Funeral Services For Norma Peters

Norma Peters, 86, of Elgin, NE passed away Friday, September 22, 2017 at her home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Elgin, NE, with Rev. Bill Linde officiating. Burial will follow in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery, Elgin, NE. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at Huffman-Levander Funeral Home in Elgin, NE.

Huffman-Levander Funeral Home of Elgin, NE is in charge of the arrangements. 

Norma Jean Peters, daughter of Elmer and Ida (Matson) Swanson was born August 30, 1931 on the family farm east of Elgin, NE. She attended elementary school at a rural Antelope County School and graduated valedictorian of her class from Elgin High School in 1949. Following high school, she taught school for a year. 

On June 8, 1950, Norma married Kenneth Peters at the Elgin United Methodist Church. The couple were blessed with six children: Gwendolyn, Myron, Gaylen, Jean, David and Noreen. Norma and Ken operated Peters Well and Plumbing, where Norma was a bookkeeper and helped Ken until their retirement. She was also a Licensed Real Estate Agent and operated an independent realty business, along with being the Home Management System Coordinator. She was active in the Elgin United Methodist Church, 4-H Club, Elgin Chamber of Commerce and Elgin Rescue Squad. She was a Sunday School teacher and took the yearly census report for the school for many years. 

After retirement, she and Ken drove transportation for Prince of the Road. She enjoyed playing Bridge and 30 point Pitch until she lost her vision. Over the years, her home became known as the “House of Norma” and was a frequent gathering place for family and friends.

Norma is survived by three daughters: Gwendolyn Faye Peters-Koinzan, Noreen Kay Peters-Weidner and Jean Carol Peters, all of Elgin, NE; two daughters-in-law: Cristi Peters of Norfolk, NE and Rita Peters of Omaha, NE; one brother Wayne (Gloria) Swanson of Ogallala, NE; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, some of which were lovingly adopted; along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ken in 2006, three sons: Myron (1996), Gaylen (2003) and David (2015); two sisters: Mildred Smith and Margy Bartak.
