Herman G. Starman 94, of Grand Island, NE formerly of Elgin, NE, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Grand Island, NE

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 28, 2017 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE with Fr. Kevin Vogel, Fr. Bernard Starman, and Deacon John Starman officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service. Interment will be at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Elgin, Nebraska with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin, NE, Nebraska Army National Guard, and the American Legion Riders

Huffman-Levander Funeral Home in Elgin, NE is in charge of arrangements.

Herman G. Starman, the son of John and Mary (Beckman) Starman was born on April 2, 1923 on a farm one mileeast of Elgin. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. Herman attended St. Boniface School through the 8th grade and then stayed home during the Depression to help with the family farm.
            
On May 25, 1944 Herman was drafted into the army during World War II at 21 years of age.  He served for two years in the Philippines and worked part of the time as an MP. He was honorably discharged on May 14, 1946 and returned to Elgin to farm.

            
On August 31, 1954 Herman was united in marriage to Joan Thiele at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church rural Clearwater, NE. The couple lived and farmed 2 miles southwest of Elgin, NE.  To this union two daughters: Linda and Diane were born.  Herman lived on the farm until 2010 when he moved to Grand Island, NE.

            
Herman was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE, counted parish donations, and volunteered for 15 years as a groundskeeper by mowing, trimming, and shoveling snow.  He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was also a quartermaster for the Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the American Legion.   Herman enjoyed reading, farming, and mechanics.  He also loved to take leisurely Sunday drives and attend auctions.  He enjoyed eating and then playing games at the Elgin Senior Citizen’s Center.

            
He is survived by his two daughters: Linda Gutchewsky of Omaha, NE; and Diane (Todd) Spaulding of Grand Island, NE; six grandchildren: Kelley Larsen of Elkhorn, NE; James and Corey Gutchewsky of Omaha, NE; Kade Leetch of Stapleton, NE; Faith (Joseph) Sumpter of Downs, KS; and Sydnie Spaulding of Grand Island, NE; three great-grandchildren Pierce Harris of Elkhorn, NE, Jerzi and Jovi Sumpter of Downs, KS;  sister Catherine Hemenway of Clearwater, NE, along with other relatives and friends.

            
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Joan in 1999, brother Ed in 2010, and sister Helen Venteicher in 2014.
