Helen E. Driskel, 101, of Albion, NE, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Boone County Health Center, Albion, NE.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, NE with Rev. Stan Schmit officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 6-7p.m. Monday April 25th at Levander Funeral Home, Albion, NE

Helen, daughter of Andrew and Catherine (Kluthe) Miller, was born April 12, 1915 at home on a farm near Albion, NE, and moved with her parents to a farm near Cedar Rapids, NE. She rode a horse and buggy to school at Plum Center country school, which she attended until tenth grade. Following her mother’s death in 1929, Helen kept house, cooked, cleaned, canned, and sewed for her younger sisters. “We had hard time, but we were happy,” said Helen in a 2014 interview. “We learned to appreciate what we had and learned how to get along with each other.” She loved to dance and was a bit of a daredevil, accepting a ride from a Kluthe cousin in an open-cockpit airplane about 1929. To help out during the Great Depression, Helen worked at the home of Max and Hattie Wolf in Albion, where she said, “Hattie taught me how to do things right.”

Helen then attended beauty school in Omaha and moved to Wichita, KS, where she met her husband, Elven. She opened her own beauty shop so she could stay home with their daughter Sonya, and enjoyed getting together with her many friends to play cards. She spent many hours volunteering at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita, and was very active in the altar society, holding various offices over the years. Helen moved to Albion with her husband in 2006, where she took great pleasure in spending time with her sisters and family, and socializing with her friends. She liked keeping her hands busy playing the piano, crocheting, reading novels and participating in numerous bridge clubs where she made many friends.

Helen is survived by her daughter: Sonya (Bob) Mylls of Oakton, VA; grandson: Rob (Kim) of Santa Cruz, CA; granddaughter: Kristine (Dudley Lightsey) Mylls of Nashville, TN; sisters: Dolores Schaeffer and Marie Krohn, both of Albion, NE; and Rita Seaman of Tempe, AZ; sister-in-law: Lorene Miller Landis of Derby, KS; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Elven; sister: Rose Koerber; and brother Joe.
