Funeral Services For Gerald Towey

Gerald J. Towey, 89 of Cedar Rapids, NE passed away Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Albion, NE.
 
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE with Msgr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, NE. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at the church with a 7:00 p.m. Wake Service.
 
Levander Funeral Home of Cedar Rapids, NE is in charge of the arrangements. 

Gerald “Jerry” Joseph Towey, the son of Thomas and Mae (Dugan) Towey was born on October 24, 1927 at Cedar Rapids, NE. He attended elementary school at a country school except for one year when he attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School. Jerry graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1945.

On June 13, 1949 Jerry was united in marriage to Philamae Ann Boesch at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They lived and farmed on his families farm on the Greeley county line 10 miles west of Cedar Rapids their entire lives.

Jerry was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #7889 where he served as a Grand Knight. Jerry was the longest member of the council at 62 years. Jerry and Philimae served as ushers at church for funerals. Jerry enjoyed challenging his kids and their friends to foot races, and usually won. He played baseball every evening after supper with his kids. Jerry never quit being a farmer, he took great pride in their garden, raising wonderful produce for their family and friends. Jerry also played on a bowling league, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Jerry is survived by his wife Philimae of Cedar Rapids, NE; five children: Janet (Jim) Goering of Geneva, NE; Jim (Carol) Towey of Albion, NE; Tim (Nancy) Towey of Omaha, NE; Terry (Rita) Towey of Bloomington, MN; and Don (Andree) Towey of Gretna, NE; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-granchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Francis, Thomas, Jr., and Paul; two sisters: Genevieve Coyle and Lucille Swengard; and his parents-in-law Tony and Theresa Boesch.
