Funeral Services For Clara S. Hamling Schmitz

Clara S. Hamling Schmitz, 103, of York, NE, formerly of Petersburg, NE, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 at the York General Hearthstone in York, NE.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg, NE with Fr. Stan Schmit officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Levander Funeral Home of Albion, NE is in charge of arrangements.

Clara Sophia Hamling Schmitz, daughter of Joseph A. and Emma (Williams) Spieker was born March 8, 1913, at Petersburg, NE. She was baptized on March 9, 1913 and later confirmed at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg, NE. She attended Petersburg Public School. Clara worked on the family farm helping her parents prior to her marriage.

On June 6, 1936 she was united in marriage to Edward Hamling at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg, NE. They made their home at Elgin, NE during which time Clara worked as a housewife. On June 11, 1976 Clara was married to Bob Schmitz at Audubon, IA. The couple resided in Audubon and continued to work as a housewife. 

Clara was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was a hard worker, and had a great memory and ability to tell stories. She was a member of various Catholic churches around the area as well as the American Legion Auxillary. 

She is survived by her son: LeRoy Hamling (friend Katy Loving) of Forsyth, MO; daughter-in-law: Joyce Hamling of York, NE; grandchildren: David (Lori) Hamling of York, NE; Nancy (David) Dickey of York, NE; Dean (Sherry) Hamling of York, NE; John Hamling of Kearney, NE; Brian (Renee) Hamling of Lenoir City, TN; Christine Lewien (friend Terry Beck) of Virginia, NE; Scott (Lynne) Hamling of Forsyth, MO; 19 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

Clara was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Ed Hamling and Bob Schmitz; son: Leander Hamling; daughter-in-law: Donna Hamling; granddaughter: Joan Hamling; two sisters and two brothers.
