Officials suspect meningitis was the cause of the death of an area teenager.
According to the High Plains school district’s website, sophomore Austin Fritz died Thursday. Fritz has a younger brother, Mickey, who is in first grade. High Plains, located in Polk County, is about 45 minutes south of Boone County. At this time representatives from the Central District Health Department aren’t considering the situation an outbreak. There are several types of meningitis and officials say it will take time for lab results to reveal which type of meningitis those in contact with Fritz may have been exposed to.
