The Riverside Chargers finished their season on Saturday night as Runner-Ups after the championship game against Falls City Sacred Heart at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.
The matchup was intense as the boys kept the game within a single digit spread throughout. However, the Chargers could not comeback after a late push in the fourth quarter by the Irish and fell to FCSH 59-42. The Chargers qualified for the championship game after topping Wynot 54-48 in the first game of the tournament and edging a win over Mullen 66-59 in the semifinals. After trailing at the end of the first two quarters of play, Riverside charged forward in the second half to earn themselves a spot in the D2 state championship game.
The Chargers picked up a 66-59 victory over Mullen on Friday night to advance. The team trailed by one at the end of the first and second quarters of play, but took control of the game in the third. Coming into the game our goal was to win each quarter, which obviously we didn't do in the first half," Coach Joe Imus said. "Our new goal became to just win the game." "They started keying in on (Tredyn) Prososki, and rightfully so, he's probably one of the best scorers in the state, all classes, as just a sophomore," the coach said. "But we have lots of other players who can step up for us and they did." Prososki led the team with 22 points, followed by Joseph Bloom with 19, Michael Bernt and Trey Carraher 7 each, Riley Swerczek 6 and Ty Martinsen 5. The #2 Chargers will face #1 Falls City Sacred Heart in the D2 championship at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Pinnacle Bank Arena. Riverside won its first round of the boys state tournament over Wynot on Thursday.
The Chargers held on for a 54-48 victory at Lincoln Northeast High School and will advance to play Mullen at 8:45 p.m. Friday in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Tredyn Prososki had a big night as he drained 25 points for Riverside, followed by Joseph Bloom with 14 points, Riley Swerczek 8, Ty Martinsen 4, and Keaton Carraher 3. Jessie Sullivan led the Cardinals with 19, followed by Carter Henry with 15, Cody Nelson 14, Dylan Gentrup 12 and William Frey, 4. After a major reshuffling of classes in Nebraska football, the NSAA announced the release of the new district assignments on Thursday.
After taking second in C1 this past season, Boone Central/Newman Grove will stay put in the class. They have been assigned to C1-3, where they will take on the likes of Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, Pierce, Wayne and West Point-Beemer. After four-straight state championships in 6-man football, Riverside makes the jump to 8-man. They will hit the field as part of the D2-4 district for the first time ever in 2018. They will be joined in their district by the likes of Elgin Public/Pope John, Humphrey St. Francis, Osmond, Plainview and Winside. St. Edward will remain part of 6-man football, which goes back under NSAA regulation for the first time in two decades. They will be in the D6-1 district, along with Elba, Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Santee, Spalding Academy and Walthill. Schedules for the 2018-19 cycle will be announced at a later date. The 2017 fall sports season has come and gone, maybe a little faster than some had hoped. It was full of highs and lows for all the teams in the area each and every week. Individuals from al across the Local County News area put in work and the results showed under the lights when it was game time.
With that, we are proud to introduce the 2017 Fall Sports All-Area Teams. With help from our staff and coaches from across the region, we narrowed down the list to 25 football players, 25 volleyball players, 15 boy cross country runners and 15 girl cross country runners that stood above the rest all year long. Congratulations to all the honorees on both the All-Area teams and the honorable mention list. You’re hard work has not gone unnoticed. Football On the top 25 list for football, Boone County was represented by some athletes that led their team all the way to the top of the class. Dylan Gentrup, Sr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: The senior led the Cardinals to a state runner up finish on the year after putting up 2,014 yards through the air and another 1,419 on the ground to go with 20 touchdowns. Levi Krueger, Sr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: Another member of the high-powered Cardinal squad, Krueger was one of the area leaders on the ground, racking up 1,226 rush yards and 21 total touchdowns. Ty Martinsen, Jr., Riverside: 2,990 yards of offense, 33 touchdowns, 86 tackles and a fourth-straight state championship is a great way to make the All-area team. That is exactly how Martinsen's year went. Cody Nelson, Sr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: The third head of the Boone Central/Newman Grove triple threat, Nelson did his damage through the air, racking up 728 yards. He also finished with a team-high five interceptions. Volleyball Riverside came just one win away from representing Boone County at the state tournament this year, led by their two members on our list. Morgan Haschke, Jr., Riverside: While Haschke did plenty of damage through her serving with 31 aces, her biggest impact came in controlling the offense, finishing with an incredible 674 assists. Maddie Walkowiak, Sr., Riverside: Walkowiak was one of the top scoring threats in the entire area all season, finishing with 372 kills. She was also incredibly active defensively, bringing up 303 digs. Boys Cross Country Making it into the top 15 cross country runners is no easy task, but two state qualifiers did just that. Jonathon Lindgren, Fr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: The freshman cemented his place as a force in the cross country world for the next four years when he finished fifth at state with a time of 17:29.2. Jacob Riggs-Ramage, Jr., St. Edward: Riggs-Ramage was a leader for the Beavers all season, eventually finishing 76th at state with a time of 19:13.8. Girls Cross Country When you send your entire team down to the state meet, it is bound to be made up of incredible runners, like the four on this list. Katie Goodwater, Jr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: Goodwater has become a frequent flier on top runner lists, eventually finishing at state in 69th place with a time of 22:52.7. Autumn Simons, Fr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: Freshman led the way for the Cardinals in 2017 and Simons was one of the best. She finished 71st at state with a time of 22:55.2. Jordan Soto-Stopak, Fr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: One way to make your mark on the cross country world is to medal as a freshman. Soto-Stopak did that, taking sixth with a time of 20:25.6. Samantha Weeder, Fr., Boone Central/Newman Grove: It is hard enough to make state as a freshman. It is even harder to medal at state as a freshman. Unless you are Weeder, who took third with a time of 19:50.0. The Cardinals battled with Norfolk Catholic for class supremacy on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The two familiar foes went spent the whole game countering each other, but ultimately it was the Knights that were able to blank BC/NG 35-0. The first quarter was all about the defense, with neither team finding much success moving the ball. However, the second quarter saw Norfolk Catholic break through a stout Boone Central/Newman Grove defense twice to take a 14-0 lead into the break. In the second half, the Cardinals continued to struggle, with yards being hard to find against the fast defense of the Knights. Meanwhile, Norfolk Catholic continued to use their speed to their advantage, tacking on points en route to the shutout win. Quarterback Dylan Gentrup was the focal point of the Boone Central/Newman Grove attack all day. He connected on just four of his 18 attempts for 39 yards. However, he led the way on the ground with 90 yards on 19 carries as he attempted to keep things moving for the Cardinals. Levi Kreuger acted as the co-pilot for the Cardinal offense, adding 63 yards on nine carries and leading all BC/NG receivers with two catches for 20 yards. Cody Nelson added a catch for 11 yards and William Frey added another for eight yards. Defensively, Jessie Sullivan was the big man in the middle of it all for the Cardinals. He finished with a game-high 13 tackles. Garrett Cornwell added 11 more and Weston Chaot recorded 10. The 2017 volleyball subdistrict brackets have been announced for D2-6. The Riverside Chargers have been placed as the #1 seed.
The Chargers will take on the winner of the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller and Elba game at 8 p.m. on Monday, October 30th in Ansley. The subdistrict final game will be played Tuesday, October 31st at 7 p.m. in Ansley. |
