Petersburg Community Club is holding their 13th annual Punkin' Chunkin' on Sunday, October 30!
Enter your machine to shoot, launch, throw or fling a 6-12 pound pumpkin for your chance to win a cash prize. The event will also have kids' activities including a petting zoo, launching contest and obstacle course. Other activities including a food stand and Punkin' Chunkin' t-shirts. The Rae Valley Heritage Association of Petersburg is pleased to host the 34rd annual Antique Tractor and Horse Plowing Bee on Friday-Sunday, August 26-28.
This one of a kind event not only displays the tractors of the past, but offers onlookers a close-up, real life demonstration of "the way things were" on the farm in years past. Those interested in displaying their vintage machinery are encouraged to do so, including tractors, tillage equipment, and machinery of all years, makes, and models. The schedule is full, and there is something for everyone at the three day event, including both a long and short "Tractor-cade," a working blacksmith, steam and gas engines on display, a shingle and sawmill, multitudes of antique tractors and machinery to view, horse-powered machinery, plowing demonstrations, threshing displays and other working events, flea market, food, music, and vendors, and raffle prizes. Admission is free! A Family Fun Night will be held at the Petersburg Park this Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at 8 p.m. A short children’s film will be shown at dusk, followed by the feature. Popcorn and pop will be available at the Snack Shack, and ice cream sundaes will also be served. The event is sponsored by the Petersburg Community Club. Two fire departments were called to a baler fire west of Elgin on Monday afternoon.
The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department was called as mutual aid 13 miles west of Elgin. The fire took place within Wheeler County. Shortly afterward, at approximately 2:45 p.m., both Petersburg and Elgin Volunteer Fire Departments were called to assist with the fire. Jim Kittleson, Fire Chief for the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire was started by hot bearings on the baler. This story will be updated when more information is available. The Dr. Bill Path Residence Hall is set to open to students this fall at Northeast Community College.
Dr. Michael Chipps, president of Northeast Community College, led members of the board of governors on a tour of the new facility last week. The new hall also has an adjoining dining facility. The hall is named after Dr. Bill Path, former president at Northeast Community College. The first night of Petersburg Carnival Days was filled with fun for all ages.
The night started with the raising of a new town flag and was then followed by kids' foot races, diaper races, and bike races. The night continued on with kids and adults going on rides, playing games, and eating food. Don't forget to stop in Petersburg tonight for BBQ at 6 p.m. sponsored by Great Plains State Bank, another flag raising, the commissioning of new park equipment, a Jr. Reicks dedication, thrilling rides and fun games. The Petersburg Carnival Days are set for two days of fun June 21 and 22. The DC Lynch Carnival will be in town both nights with plenty of entertainment for families. On Tuesday, there will be a flag raising at 7 p.m. along with kid races that evening. Wednesday, Great Plains State Bank will sponsor a BBQ at 6 p.m. Following the BBQ, there will be another flag raising, along with the commissioning of the new park equipment and a Jr. Reicks dedication. The Village of Petersburg is taking bids on two pieces of playground equipment. The swing set is 8 feet tall, 30 feet long and 20 feet wide and the merry go round 13.5 feet in diameter and 4 feet tall. These are being replaced with a new set. The Nebraska State Patrol is urging motorists to be prepared and keep up-to-date on the latest weather and road conditions as a powerful winter storm expected to impact travel is forecast for Nebraska. “This storm as forecasted would make travel extremely dangerous across a good portion of the state,” said Colonel Bradley Rice, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We encourage all motorists to stay up-to-date by monitoring the weather and road conditions closely and be prepared to change travel plans if need be.” Travelers can check on road closures and conditions by utilizing 511, Nebraska’s Advanced Traveler Information System.
