Funeral Services for Eugene R. Patzel

Eugene R. Patzel, 86, of Newman Grove, NE, died Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove, NE.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Levander Funeral Home in Albion, NE with Rev. Michael Kern officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Primrose, NE with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #162 and VFW Post #736 of Albion, NE. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Eugene Robert Patzel, son of Herman August and Alta (Miller) Patzel, was born December 7, 1928 in Madison, NE. He grew up in the Primrose area, attended rural school near Albion and worked on the family farm. On January 30, 1952, Gene entered the United States Marine Corp and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on January 15, 1954 and then transferred into the Marine Corp Reserves until January 29, 1960. He attended Missouri Auction School graduating on December 10, 1954.

Eugene married Mary (Jeannie) J. Bumgardner in 1958. They moved to Newman Grove in 1961. They had five children: Eileen, Arnold, Marlene, Arlene and Charlene. Gene worked at Bud’s Sanitation and retired April 1, 2007. He also worked for R.L. High Construction doing masonry work for several years while he worked at Bud’s. Gene attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Lindsay. He was a member of the VFW in Albion and then transferred to Newman Grove.

He is survived by five children: Eileen Griswold (Lance) of Hastings, NE; Arnold “Arnie” Patzel of Newman Grove, NE; Marlene Duffy (Jay) of Waukon, IA; Arlene Borgheiinck (Richard) of Newman Grove, NE, Charlene “Charlie” Kuehler of Columbus, NE; nine grandchildren: Cassie Casey (Chris), Jessie London (Jaime), Blake Prorok, Brittney Prorok, Bryan and Benjamin Widhalm, Bridgette, Breanna and Bethany Borgheiinck; six great-grandchildren: Sean, Lillian and Liam Casey, Elliot London, Dominick Widhalm, and Graham Vance; two brothers: Norman “Normie” and Melvin “Bud” Patzel, both of Weeping Water; three sisters LaVerna Zumbrum of Norfolk, Viola Avery of Madison and Mary Sabata of Rising City.

He is preceded in death by his parents Herman and Alta Patzel, three sisters, Leona Meers, Doris Majerus and Alta Hoefler; one grandson Blake Widhalm.
