Boone Central/Newman Grove will once again be represented at the annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Classic, this time on the sidelines.
Head coach Mark Hudson was named as the head coach for the 2017 North Team. Hudson recently completed his second season as the Cardinals' head coach after 12 seasons as head coach at Ravenna. He will be joined by Dan Zoucha. Zoucha will be on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the North Team. The Shrine Bowl is scheduled for June 3 at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium in Kearney. The Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball squad fought to the very end, but they were unable to extend their season past the first round of subdistricts Monday night.
The Cardinals fell in five sets, 25-16, 24-26, 25-21, 19-25, 10-15. The Cardinals were led by a strong offensive attack. Jenna Kramer and Karley Zoucha were each credited with 14 kills on the night. Tessa Hedlund was credited with eight. Hedlund also had a strong night from the service line, recording four aces. The loss ends the Cardinals' season at 11-18, a slight drop from last season's 14-14 record. Kramer led the team's attack for most of the year, recording 242 total kills. She also led the team in blocks with 50. A great cross country season has earned one Boone Central/Newman Grove runner yet another honor.
Just over a week after finishing fourth at the state meet, Christina Soto-Stopak was named as one of seven runners on the Nebraska Coaches Association Class C Girls All-State team. Soto-Stopak led the Cardinals cross country squad for much of the year, including running a time of 20:22.9 at the state meet in Kearney. The brackets have been released for the C1-7 district volleyball tournament, hosted by Norfolk High School.
Boone Central/Newman Grove will open play at 6:15 p.m. when they take on Pierce. The Cardinals drew the third seed. Boone County Courthouse will be closed from 10:30 to Noon on Thursday, October 27 for the funeral of Sheryl Machacek.
At the Boone County Board of Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, the County Board decided to close the courthouse from 10:30 to Noon on Thursday for the funeral of Sheryl Machacek. Sheryl’s employment started in 1998 with the Boone County Sheriff’s office. Funeral service is at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational UCC Church in Albion. The mobile food pantry will be back in Albion November 5th
It will be located in the Casey building at the Albion Fairgrounds and is open from 9:30-11 a.m. The enterance is through the west doors. Volunteers are asked to arrive between 8 and 8:30 a.m. to help set up and unload the truck. Boone Central/Newman Grove saw their conference title hopes fall in a closely contested game Tuesday night in Pierce.
The Cardinals fell to Wayne in three sets, 27-25, 25-18, 25-17. Jenna Kramer did her best to keep Boone Central/Newman Grove's chance alive, putting down 11 kills and recording three blocks. Karley Zoucha added seven kills and two aces in the effort. Mya Donelson brought up 13 digs while Tessa Hedlund recorded 10. After the elimination at the Mid-State Conference Tournament, the Cardinals must now await the announcement of their first round opponent at the subdistrict tournament. Boone Central/Newman Grove was well represented at the State Cross Country Meet in Kearney on Friday.
Christina Soto-Stopak and Katie Goodwater proved themselves to be among the top runners in the state at the meet. Soto-Stopak finished third with a time of 20:22.9. Goodwater finished 20th with a time of 21:19.0. Taya Skelton of Fort Calhoun was the top runner on the day, finishing with a time of 19:34.0. The Mid State Conference Volleyball Tournament bracket has been released.
Action gets started on Monday in Battle Creek and Pierce. In Battle Creek, Norfolk Catholic and O’Neill in the opening round at 4:30 p.m. with the winner taking on Crofton in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Battle Creek will take on Pierce at 6 p.m. On the other half of the bracket in Pierce, Wayne and West Point Guardian Angels Central Catholic go head-to-head at 6 p.m. and Boone Central/Newman Grove plays Hartington Cedar Catholic at 7:30 p.m. The finals will take place Thursday, October 27th at Battle Creek. Click the link for the full bracket. Fairview Street is closed at Highway 14 and will be for 2-4 more weeks due to construction activity for Phase I of the Fairview Storm Drainage Project. The intersection will reopen once the project has progressed far enough west so it won't cause a traffic flow restriction off of the highway onto Fairview. Also, traffic control will be put up at Fairview and 1st Streets indicating local traffic only (no through traffic) Eastbound on Fairview Street. B-D Construction will move traffic control to the East end of the Football parking lot on game days to allow better ingress/egress of that lot from the West. It is recommended that any emergency vehicles transporting patients to the Boone County Health Center from the south that would normally utilize Fairview Street from Hwy 14 to use an alternate route such as 265th Street West to 6th Street and North to Fairview Street. |
